PET Scan - Patient Preparation

Patient Preparation for PET Scan - Overview & Techniques

Archer Radiology asks that patients scheduled for PET scanning observe the following guidelines, which will insure that the maximum benefit is obtained from the scan.

Dress warmly, since the scanner room is usually cool.

Do not eat or drink anything for six hours prior to the scan. Limit your intake of sugar and caffeine the day before.

You may take your regular medications, if they can be taken with an empty stomach. If you require pain medication, please bring it with you to the scan.

If you are diabetic, please call Archer Radiology for specific instructions about taking your insulin. Check your blood sugar level before the scan. It should be approximately 100-200 mg/dL.

You should be prepared for your session at Archer Radiology to take a total of up to two hours.

When you arrive on the day of the scan, Archer Radiology staff will give you an injection of radioactive glucose (FDG). It takes approximately 45 minutes for the glucose to be distributed fully through your body. Staff will give you an opportunity to empty your bladder. Then you will lie on the scanner bed for a period ranging between 15 and 60 minutes, depending upon the scan.

For the rest of the day following the scan, drink plenty of water and other fluids to clear what is left of the FDG from your system.

Archer Radiology will send the results of the scan to your physician, usually within three days. You should make an appointment with your physician to discuss the results.
