PET Scan - Colon Cancer

PET Scan for Colon Cancer - Overview & Techniques

Archer Radiology offers a PET scan for colon cancer.

PET scanning is the most common form of molecular imaging used in diagnosing and guiding the treatment of colorectal cancer. It is often employed in conjunction with computed tomography (CT) scanning. In one out of three cases, the combination of PET and CT scans leads to changes in a patient's treatment.

After treatment, the disease often recurs in the same place. A PET/CT scan can analyze any suspicious masses and ascertain whether they are cancerous tumors or mere scar tissue. The cancer may also spread to the liver, requiring surgery. In this case PET/CT scanning will specify to which sites the disease has spread, eliminating unnecessary preventive surgery and increasing the patient survival rate.

A colon cancer patient may require a PET/CT scan intermittently throughout the progress of the disease, for purposes of diagnosis, treatment, and the prevention of recurrence.

PET Scan for Colon Cancer - Alternative Names & Explanations

PET scan for colorectal cancer, PET cancer detection, FDG-PET scan, cancer test, cancer diagnosis using PET, combined PET/CT colonography

Colon Cancer PET Scan - Common Indications & Positive Findings

  • Nodular density along wall of cystic lesion
  • Metastatic lesions in liver or sacrum
  • Increased uptake of FDG in esophagus or presacral space
  • Uptake in soft tissue mass
  • Hypermetabolic foci in lungs

Colon Cancer PET Scan - Benefits

  • Establishing how advanced the cancer is and whether it has spread to other parts of the body
  • Helping physicians and patients decide on courses of treatment that are tailored to patients' individual conditions and needs
  • Determining whether chemotherapy or other treatments are working as intended
  • Detecting whether the disease has recurred after treatments are completed
  • Assisting physicians in determining a site that is appropriate for biopsy if necessary
