MRI - Pelvis

Pelvis MRI - Overview & Technique

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the pelvis is a noninvasive method to create detailed pictures of the area between the hip bones. This part of the body is called the pelvic area. The pelvic area contains the reproductive organs. In women, it includes the womb (uterus), cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. In men, it includes the prostate gland and testicles.Unlike x-rays and computed tomographic (CT) scans, which use radiation, MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves. The MRI scanner contains the magnet. The magnetic field produced by an MRI is about 10 thousand times greater than the earth's. The magnetic field forces hydrogen atoms in the body to line up in a certain way (similar to how the needle on a compass moves when you hold it near a magnet). When radio waves are sent toward the lined-up hydrogen atoms, they bounce back, and a computer records the signal. Different types of tissues send back different signals.

Pelvic MRI - Alternative Names and Explanations

MRI - pelvis; MRI - hips; Pelvic MRI with prostate probe; Magnetic resonance imaging - pelvis, MRI Pelvis w/o contrast CPT code 72195, MRI Pelvis with & w/o contrast CPT code 72197, MRA Pelvis with & w/o contrast CPT code 72198

Pelvic MRI - Benefits versus Other Diagnostic Tests

  • MRI is a noninvasive imaging technique that does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation.
  • MRI enables the discovery of abnormalities that might be obscured by bone with other imaging methods.
  • MRI allows physicians to assess the biliary system noninvasively and without contrast injection.
  • The contrast material used in MRI exams is less likely to produce an allergic reaction than the iodine-based materials used for conventional x-rays and CT scanning.

MRI of the Pelvis - Common Positive Findings

  • Uterine fibroids and adenomyosis
  • Pre and post embolization assessment of uterine fibroids
  • Endometrial polyps and submucosal fibroids
  • Characterization of ovarian masses
  • Staging of endometrial carcinoma
  • Staging of cervical carcinoma
  • Staging of ovarian carcinoma
  • Staging of rectal carcinoma
  • Urinary bladder tumors
  • Abnormalities of male or female urethra
  • Perianal fistulas
  • Vesico-vaginal and recto-vaginal fistulas.
