MRI - Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)

MR Cholangiopancreatography - Overview & Technique

Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP ) is a special kind of MRI scan enabling the physician to visualize the bile and pancreatic ducts in a non-invasive way. This is particularly helpful since tumors typically arise in the ducts. At the Pancreas Center, this is a very important test in determining if the patient is a suitable surgical candidate.

MR Cholangiopancreatography - Alternative Names

Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography, MRCP

MRCP - Benefits versus Other Diagnostic Tests

  • The images produced are as good as those produced by more invasive tests, in which dye is directly injected into the biliary and pancreatic ducts.
  • Unlike CT, MRI tests do not involve exposure to x-rays, though they are more expensive than CT and take longer to perform.

MRCP - Indications, Common Uses, & Positive Findings

  • This procedure can be used to determine if gallstones are lodged in any of the ducts surrounding the gallbladder.
