PET Scan - Lung Cancer

PET Scan for Lung Cancer - Overview & Techniques

Archer Radiology offers a PET scan for lung cancer.

PET scanning is the most common form of molecular imaging used in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, often in conjunction with computed tomography (CT) scanning. PET/CT helps guide the treatment of small cell lung cancers, which are the most aggressive and make up 20 percent of lung cancer cases.

Once a lung mass is evaluated by x-ray or CT scan, a PET scan will indicate with a high degree of accuracy whether the mass is cancerous. It will indicate whether a biopsy is necessary and also point out the lesions that are most suspect and easily accessed.

PET/CT scans are significantly more accurate than other tests in showing whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body.  Thus PET/CT scanning is a critical tool in determining the prospects of surgery and in monitoring the effectiveness of surgery or other treatment.

PET Scan for Lung Cancer - Alternative Names & Explanations

PET detection of lung cancer, staging and restaging lung cancer, lung positron emission tomography scan, lung cancer test, FDG-PET scan for lung cancer, early detection and screening of lung cancer

PET Scan for Lung Cancer - Benefits

  • Detecting lung cancer
  • Locating the most appropriate site for biopsy
  • Establishing how advanced the cancer is and whether it has spread to other parts of the body
  • Helping physicians and patients decide on courses of treatment that are tailored to patients’ individual conditions and needs
  • Determining whether medical treatments are working as intended
  • Detecting whether the disease has recurred after treatments are completed
  • Assisting physicians in determining a site that is appropriate for biopsy if necessary
