CT Angiogram (CTA) - Abdomen

CT Angiogram of the Abdomen - Overview & Technique

An angiogram, also called an arteriogram, is an x-ray image of the blood vessels. It is performed to evaluate various vascular conditions, such as an aneurysm (ballooning of a blood vessel), stenosis (narrowing of a blood vessel), or blockages. An abdominal angiogram is an angiogram of the blood vessels of the abdomen. An abdominal angiogram may be used to assess the blood flow to organs of the abdomen, such as the liver and spleen. It may also be used to deliver medication into structures of the abdomen to treat cancer or hemorrhage. Fluoroscopy is often used during an abdominal angiogram. Fluoroscopy is a study of moving body structures - similar to an x-ray “movie.” A continuous x-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined, and is transmitted to a TV-like monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail.

Abdomen CTA - Benefits

  • CT is fast, which is important for patients who have trouble holding their breath.
  • CT scanning is painless, noninvasive and accurate.
  • A major advantage of CT is its ability to image bone, soft tissue and blood vessels all at the same time.
  • Unlike conventional x-rays, CT scanning provides very detailed images of many types of tissue as well as the lungs, bones, and blood vessels.
  • CT examinations are fast and simple; in emergency cases, they can reveal internal injuries and bleeding quickly enough to help save lives.
  • CT has been shown to be a cost-effective imaging tool for a wide range of clinical problems.
  • CT is less sensitive to patient movement than MRI.
  • CT can be performed if you have an implanted medical device of any kind, unlike MRI.
  • CT imaging provides real-time imaging, making it a good tool for guiding minimally invasive procedures such as needle biopsies and needle aspirations of many areas of the body, particularly the lungs, abdomen, pelvis and bones.
  • A diagnosis determined by CT scanning may eliminate the need for exploratory surgery and surgical biopsy.
  • No radiation remains in a patient's body after a CT examination.
  • X-rays used in CT scans usually have no immediate side effects.

CT Angiogram of the Abdomen - Positive Findings

An abdominal angiogram may be performed to detect abnormalities of the blood vessels within the abdomen or of the abdominal organs. Such abnormalities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • aneurysms
  • stenosis (constriction or narrowing) or vasospasm (a spasm of the blood vessel)
  • arteriovenous malformation (an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins)
  • thrombosis (a blood clot within a blood vessel) or occlusion (blockage of a blood vessel)
  • tumors, hemorrhage, cirrhosis, gallstones, inflammation, and the invasion of a tumor into the blood vessels.
